The Other Eleven

The Ohio State Buckeyes are a household name in the United States, known as one of the most celebrated and successful college football programs in NCAA history. Yet there is another football team at the university, comprised of players who, instead of receiving athletic scholarships, pay out of their own pocket to continue to play the sport they love. We follow their journey during the 2013 season, observing the highs and lows of club football. The feature-length documentary was directed and edited by Michael W. Mullen II, who played on the team from 2011-2014. Game and interview footage was primarily captured by David Goodwin.

Papers for Change

Joseph Ramirez was a staple figure just off campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH for several years. Joseph’s infectious smile and friendly disposition easily concealed the fact that he was going through his own trials and tribulations on a daily basis. Anyone willing to have a conversation would find an honest man with an open heart that managed to see the positive out of any bad situation. Though homeless for much of his time in Columbus, he managed to make ends meet by selling Street Speech newspapers with assistance from Columbus Coalition for the Homeless. Joseph passed away in December of 2017, but this short documentary stands as a celebration of the life of Joseph Ramirez.

Joseph was well-known and liked by the Ohio State community. He knew many students and faculty members by name and would regularly hold conversation with many of them. After getting to know Joseph and releasing this short documentary, we started a GoFundMe in order to help ease his financial burden a bit. We received an overwhelming amount of support and were able to surprise Joseph with just over $500 which he graciously accepted. The GoFundMe page can be found by clicking the image of Joseph waving.
